From the time of his admission to the bar in 1980 through 1998, Attorney McCabe practiced throughout the State of Connecticut, working for several firms including Kowal & Canner in Hartford. In Norwalk, Attorney McCabe was an associate at the Law Offices of Vincent Flaherty, and then worked for a brief period of time as assistant corporation counsel for the City of Norwalk. Next, he was an associate at DePanfilis & Valerie, where he became a partner in 1989. Thereafter, Attorney McCabe joined the firm of Slavitt, Connery & Vardamis for three years before openng his own private practice in 1998. During his time in private practice, he also performed work for The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company from 2002 to 2005.
Attorney McCabe currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Milford Bar Association, and is the MBA's board representative for New Haven Legal Assistance. With respect to community involvement, Attorney McCabe has been actively involved with the Irish Heritage Society of Milford since 2006, and currently holds the office of President. In addition, Attorney McCabe sits on the community appeal cabinet for the United Way of Milford.
Attorney Wikstrom clerked for the Family Section of the Bridgeport Superior Court for six months after taking the bar examination. Once admitted to the bar, she was hired as an Associate Attorney for the law firm of Portanova & Rutigliano, P.C. Thereafter, in October of 2006, Attorney. Wikstrom opened her own practice, the Law Offices of Erica A. Wikstrom, where she practiced for eight years.
In June of 2014, Attorneys McCabe and Wikstrom merged their practices, and thus McCabe & Wikstrom, LLC was born.
In January of 2017, Attorneys McCabe and Wikstrom joined forces with Atty. Barney, rounding out their practice to include civil, family and criminal litigation. In 2023, Atty. Melissa Nixon joined the firm as associate counsel; her practice focuses on probate work, see below!
Attorney Wikstrom is a Past President of the Milford Bar Association, and in the past has served as its Vice President, Treasurer, Chair of the Law Day Committee, and on the Board of Directors. Attorney Wikstrom also volunteers as a Special Master for the Milford, New Haven and Bridgeport Superior Courts, as well as for the Regional Family Trial Docket in Middletown, CT.
Upon his graduation from Quinnipiac University, Attorney Barney worked as an associate for the financial services firm of Arthur Anderson, LLP, as a consultant in state and local tax practice for this worldwide, multi-disciplined accounting firm, primarily focusing on income and franchise taxes.
In November of 2001, Attorney Barney began his work as an Assistant State's Attorney, first as a deputy and then as a senior assistant. Through his work there, Attorney Barney gained vast knowledge and experience as to the inner workings of the criminal justice system in Connecticut. This insight, which cannot be gleaned in any other way, provides Attorney Barney's clients a high level of confidence in his abilities to provide the most effective representation.
Leaving the State's Attorney's Office in January of 2015, Attorney Barney began his private practice as a criminal defense lawyer. Working both individually and for Attorney Jack O'Donnell in New Haven, Attorney Barney is proud to join forces with Attorneys McCabe and Wikstrom, thus forming McCabe, Wikstrom & Barney, LLC.
Having passed the bar exam, Attorney Nixon went into private practice at the Carchia Law Office for the Hon. Americo R. Carchia prior to his taking the bench in January 2023. Attorney Nixon’s practice area primarily focused on probate law, including conservatorships, decedent’s estates, guardian of the intellectually disabled, and children’s matters. She also performed real estate closings, and took on both family and criminal cases on a limited basis.
Attorney Nixon is dedicated to helping children and families navigate through tumultuous situations and remains committed to her work in the probate system. She is currently on the panel of Probate Court-appointed attorneys and presently sits on the Probate Court Rules Advisory Committee. Outside of practicing law, Attorney Nixon is involved in numerous community activities and is actively involved with the Devon Rotary Club as club secretary.
At MWB, Attorney Nixon will continue her probate work, and plans to expand her practice to include civil, family and criminal work on a more extensive basis.
